John Lewis Hornblower, Age 30

John’s parents William and Georgina both from Dawley married in 1876 and had then moved to Manchester for a short while where their daughter Susannah was born but by 1881 the family were back in Dawley living at Stocking Rd having had two more children Ethel & John Edwin. By 1891 the family had both moved again and enlarged with them now residing in Little Dawley with the addition of William, Harry, John Lewis & Sidney. In 1901 they had moved to Blists Hill with the family enlarged again with Percy & Doris, by 1911 they had moved once more to 35 Coalport road.

William snr had risen from the ranks in the tile works from being a tile burner to become the foreman, and by this time William jnr was an engine driver and John Lewis was a clerk. In 1916 John had married his wife Julia May Lewis and had moved back to Dawley and lived at 30 High Street, Dawley where Julia had given birth to their daughter Ethel.

Shortly after Ethel's birth the family moved to Hednesford and it was whilst living there that John was called up in 1918, John was wounded in Oct 1918 and died from these wounds at No.5 base hospital Rouen on October 14 1918 and he lies buried in St Sever Cemetery extension in Grave S.II.B.5

John's brother, Harry became the manager of the Dawley waterworks, and his other brother Percy also fought and had won the Military Cross and became a full Lieutenant during the War.
